Workshop promises to be another successful event for the students of the
Society. Professional researchers in 17 categories of study related
to marine mammal science have pledged to participate in round table discussions
with students and keynote speakers on matters related to furthering one's

three exceptional keynote speakers, and participation from over 30 of the
top scientists in our field.

The second Student Affairs Workshop featured several talks on different
career types in marine mammalogy. Students and professional marine
mammalogists then had the chance to talk within small groups in order to
address issues particular to the various fields within marine mammalogy.
We ended with a discussion of student roles and opportunities within the
Society for Marine Mammalogy.

1998 Student Affairs Workshop
The World Marine Mammal Science Conference

The first Student Affairs Workshop was organized by the SMM student
member-at-large Leah Gerber, and the ECS student representative Paula Moreno.
The workshop was highly attended and highly regarded, and started what will
hopefully continue to be a valuable resource for students at the Biennial
conferences.
