The Society for Marine Mammalogy
Membership Information
All members receive the journal Marine Mammal Science and the Society’s Newsletter. Both are published quarterly (the newsletter electronically). Members also have access to the Membership Directory on the website. Except as noted, membership includes the right to vote in Society elections, to run for elective office, to serve on standing and ad hoc Society committees, and to participate, at the member’s registration fee rate, in the Society’s Biennial Conferences on the Biology of Marine Mammals. All dues are payable in US$.
MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES
(Please read carefully before submitting applications)
FULL MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $75
Open to professionals in the natural sciences or in the management, husbandry, conservation or training of marine mammals, and to graduate students in these fields.
EMERITUS MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $50
Open to any member who has retired from a professional career, is 60 years of age or older, and has been a Full Member of the Society for at least one year. Emeritus members have all privileges of Full membership.
STUDENT MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $50
Open to anyone actively enrolled in a degree-granting institution of higher education. Students members may not serve as officers (except Student Member-at-Large) or members of standing committees, but have all other membership privileges.
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP REQUIRES PROOF OF CURRENT STUDENT STATUS.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $70
Open to anyone interested in the aims of the Society. Associate members may not vote, hold elective office, or serve as members of standing committees, but have all other membership privileges.
INSTITUTIONAL MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $100
Open to any organization or institution. Institutional members receive all Society Publications and Notices, but may not vote in Society elections and may not hold elective office or serve on standing committees. Institutional members may register one person for the Society's conference at the member rate.
LIFE MEMBER - DUES $1200 (one-time payment), or 4 consecutive annual payments of $350 each.
Life members have the same rights and privileges of membership as Full members.
Award Funds
John R. Twiss Jr. Award: presented for innovative research related to marine mammal habitat and ecosystem conservation.
Emily B. Shane Memorial Award: supports conservation-oriented, non-harmful research on free-ranging odontocetes and sirenians.
F.G. Wood Memorial Scholarship Award: presented for the best student paper published in Marine Mammal Science during the period between successive Society conferences.
Frederic Fairfield Memorial Award: presented to recognize and encourage students who have developed or applied pioneering techniques or research tools to study marine mammals
Excellence in Science Communication Award: presented to the best poster and spoken presentations given by non-students at the Society’s biennial conference that demonstrate creative and effective communication techniques.
Student Awards: recognition of the best poster and spoken presentations by pre-doctoral and doctoral students at the Society's biennial conference (4 awards)
Robin Best Memorial Award: given for the best poster and spoken student presentations at the biennial meetings of South American Specialists in Aquatic Mammals to stimulate and encourage South American students and young researchers to pursue the study of aquatic mammalogy in South America.
Student Travel Grants: presented to students in need of assistance with the expenses of travel to the Society’s biennial conference.
Stu Innes Memorial Student Travel Bursary: supports the travel to the Society's biennial conference of a post-secondary student conducting marine mammal research in the Arctic
J. Steven Leatherwood Memorial Award: recognizes the most outstanding student presentation on marine mammals of South and Southeast Asia, with particular emphasis on conservation, given at the Biennial Conference.
