What is the Society for Marine Mammalogy?
The Society for Marine Mammalogy was founded at San
Francisco,
California, U.S.A., on December 15, 1981, and incorporated as a
non-profit
entity under United States law on September 21, 1982, at San Francisco,
California, U.S.A.
Objectives.
1. Evaluate and promote the educational, scientific and
managerial
advancement of marine mammal science.
2. Gather and disseminate to members of the Society, the
public
and public and private institutions, scientific, technical and
management
information through publications and meetings.
3. Provide scientific information, as required, on matters
related
to the conservation and management of marine mammal resources.
Membership.
All members receive the journal Marine Mammal Science and the
Society’s Newsletter. Both are published quarterly (the
newsletter electronically). Members also have access to the
member's only section of this website, which includes the membership
directory.. Except as noted,
membership includes the right to vote in Society elections, to run for
elective office, to serve on standing and ad hoc Society committees,
and to participate, at the member’s registration fee rate, in the
Society’s Biennial Conferences on the Biology of Marine Mammals.
All dues are payable in US currency.
Membership Categories and
Dues: (Please note: The Society does not refund memberships
under any circumstances.)
FULL MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $75
Open to professionals in the natural sciences or in the management,
husbandry, conservation or training of marine mammals, and to graduate
students in these fields.
EMERITUS MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES
$50
Open to any member who has retired from a professional career, is 60
years of age or older, and has been a Full Member of the Society for at
least one year. Emeritus members have all privileges of Full
membership.
STUDENT MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES $50
Open to anyone actively enrolled in a degree-granting institution of
higher education. Students members may not serve as officers
(except Student Member-at-Large) or members of standing committees, but
have all other membership privileges.
STUDENT
MEMBERSHIP REQUIRES PROOF OF CURRENT STUDENT STATUS. The Society
reserves the right to confirm the information provided by prospective student
members at any time. Details are on the membership forms.
ASSOCIATE MEMBER - ANNUAL DUES
$70
Open to anyone interested in the aims of the Society. Associate
members may not vote, hold elective office, or serve as members of
standing committees, but have all other membership privileges.
INSTITUTIONAL MEMBER - ANNUAL
DUES $100
Open to any organization or institution. Institutional members
receive all Society Publications and Notices, but may not vote in
Society elections and may not hold elective office or serve on standing
committees. Institutional members may register one person for the
Society's conference at the member rate.
LIFE MEMBER - DUES $1200
(one-time payment), or four consecutive annual payments of US$350 each.
Life members have the same rights and privileges of membership as Full
members.
*Note: With the exception of Institutional, all membership
categories are for individuals, and are not transferrable.
Institutional members should provide the name of a contact person,
which can be updated as necessary.
Privacy
Policy: The
Society for Marine Mammalogy does not share, sell
or distribute information about our
members with any other
institution
(commercial or otherwise), for any purpose. On very rare occasions, the Society will rent
on a one-time-use-only basis its
membership
directory address list to publishers that
wish to advertise a new publication the Society believes would be of
interest
to its membership. Note: e-mail
addresses are NOT included with the
shared information.
